Survey Tip of the Week: Non-Interviewable Residents
The Long-Term Care Survey Process (LTCSP) instructs surveyors to complete a record review for any resident marked as non-interviewable, refused, unavailable, or out of facility. The record will be reviewed for the following information: pressure ulcers, dialysis, infections, nutrition (system can help calculate the percentage of weight loss), falls in the last 120 days, ADL decline in the last 120 days, low risk bladder and bowel (B&B), unplanned hospitalizations, elopement and change of condition in the last 120 days. If a non-interviewable resident has a representative or family who visits often, surveyors are to make an effort to interview the representative/family just like they would interview the resident, as part of your investigation. The surveyor will use the resident representative interview pathway.
Example interview questions specific to pressure ulcers include:
Does [resident’s name] have any sores, open areas, or pressure ulcers?
- Where is his/her pressure ulcer?
- When did he/she get it?
- How did he/she get it?
- Are staff here treating it?
- How often do they reposition [resident’s name]?
- Do you know if it is getting better?
